Fits and locating surfaces
Identify the smooth shoulder that locates the assembly and its relationship to the mating bore.

Shoulder, step and adjustment fasteners for guided mechanisms, positioning stations and automation equipment.
Discuss your application
Identify the smooth shoulder that locates the assembly and its relationship to the mating bore.
Provide the operating clearance, adjustment range, travel stops and tool access.
Agree which diameters, lengths and datum relationships are checked after treatment and coating.
A mechanism may use the same thread size for very different jobs. Start with the surface that establishes motion or position; then define how the screw retains the assembly.
| Assembly function | Specify with the mating parts | Acceptance and next review |
|---|---|---|
| Pivot on a smooth shoulder | Show bore limits, finished shoulder diameter, contact length and the axial stack. Keep the rotating interface separate from the retaining thread. Shoulder & Step Screws | Check bore-to-shoulder clearance and free movement in the assembled stack. Thread gauging alone does not accept the pivot. Cold Heading + Secondary Machining |
| Locate a removable station | Identify the locating pin, mating hole and seating face. Show their datum relationships and the intended removal direction. Screws with Integral Locating Pins | Measure the specified locating relationships and trial removal and refitting. A clamp thread is not automatically the locating datum. CCD Vision & Dimensional Inspection |
| Adjust a stop or guide | Define travel, contact end, permitted marking and how the selected setting is retained. Include operator and tool clearance at both travel ends. Knurled Thumb & Adjustment Screws | Record the setting before and after the agreed adjustment sequence. Separate visual marking, position measurement and retention checks. Secondary & Precision Operations |
A replacement bushing can change the bore limits or effective axial stack even when the screw is unchanged. Compare the new bore and stack with the finished shoulder limits, then review movement and seating. Link the bushing and screw revisions in the sample record. Keep the previous approval for its original configuration; document which checks apply to the revised assembly.
Design-review examples, not customer delivery records. Select the actual limits and checks for the ordered assembly.
Follow the automation pivot design studyFor a guided pivot, include the mating bore and axial stack. Specify locating surfaces separately from the thread used to retain the assembly.
Examples describe application requirements. Material suitability, production scope and verification are confirmed against the approved drawing.

Combining a small locating pin with a screw can reduce separate components, but the locating and clamping functions still need distinct specifications.
ENGINEERING GUIDEA coating belongs in the dimensional plan. The final fit must be evaluated in the condition that the customer receives, not only before surface treatment.
